Suoni Per Il Popolo

My first exposure to the works of Keith Fullerton Whitman was with his 2001 release 21:30 For Acoustic Guitar. What is so interesting about this particular release is every sound on the album comes from an acoustic guitar, but a single sound one is identifiable as such guitar without understanding the album’s context. As the album progresses, tone after tone are delicately layered onto of each other to create a rich, soothing experience made up of processed natural sounds of Whitman’s guitar. Looking back onto Whitman’s entire discography to date, this album serves as a perfect starting point, as it exemplifies Whitman’s ability to blend the lines between natural and synthetic, and make one fall into the other. It also serves as a great middle ground between his works that are softer in nature, such as Lisbon and Playthroughs and his noisier works, such as Disingenuity B/W Disingenuousness (a personal favourite of mine) and Generators. His musical works have also ventured into drill and bass, under the moniker Hrvatski and krautrock with releases such as Generator. Whitman, along with past collaborator Geoff Mullen, runs Mimaroglu Music Sales, which places an emphasis on experimental and electronic music.
Chris Madak has written music under the moniker Bee Mask since 2004. Taking cues from early musique concrete, early modern electronic music, and minimalism, Madak builds compositions that feel like warm psychedelia. Madak’s music has an inherently warm feel to it, a softness that permeates the music and is transmitted to the listener. A perfect example of such is on his 2010 release Canzoni Dal Laboratorio Del Silenzio Cosmico. Halfway through the first side of the LP, is a moment where the perceived sounds of a saxophone merge with a wave of synthesizer tones. Madak has released music on Deception Island, Spectrum Spools and Room40, among other labels. He has also played in the Dlx Othr and The Reel Deel.
Discipline X is the most recent project of Brian Damage, who has been a part of both Phycus (with W.A. Davidson) and Unireverse. His music as Discipline X borrows from the likes of Sun Ra and John Cage, in following a certain set of rules, and ensuring that the music created is the product of whatever those rules may be. His current work incorporates abstract works using turntables, Moog and loop pedals.
Th W rbl r is a project of W.A. Davidson, who has been composing experimental music and audiovisual performances for over 30 years. He has written music and collaborated with the likes of Nurse With Wound, Nihilist Spasm Band, and AMM, among others. He has also played in his own ensembles, Six Heads and Urban Refuse Group, and released solo works under the monikers Songs of the New Erotics, Th W rbl r, M.Stactor, Wicker Men, and Wax.
